Captain Oban lives in a small town, on a small island, in a remote part of New
Zealand, called Stewart Island. He’s a keen sailor and makes world class
sailboats in the garage. The Captain’s biggest love in the world is fixing up
his boat and sailing it in races. He works hard all day as Stewart Island’s
only fireman. At the end of the day, he races home to work on his boat. He
loves his boat and treats it like a real person. He works on it every day,
late into the night. His loyal friend 'Sheep' helps him work on the boat by
handing him tools, fixing him tea, and sewing up the sails.
On weekends, Captain Oban takes his sailboat out with 'Sheep' as his first
mate, to sail as fast as he can. He also enters races, and wins lots of them.
He’s never won The Big Cup, though. He’s determined to win it, but his friends
are more important to him than a trophy.
Captain Oban’s dream is to sail his homemade sailboat in the “Big Pacific Cup”
race. To make it to the big race, he needs to test his boat on the various
waters around New Zealand and win smaller competitions to qualify for the big
race.
